Salem's Lot was the first Stephen King novel I read.
I was working near the clocktower in Exeter at the time, and I used to walk into the shopping centre of town every lunchtime, WH Smiths being one of the nearer shops - I would often pop in to look at the new releases.
There it was, sitting on the table, an all black cover with just a teardrop shape of red at about 4 o'clock. When you picked up the book you could see that the card of the cover had been impressed to the shape of a woman's face, and the red teardrop was actually blood in the corner of her mouth.
I don't think anytime since then has the cover of a book had the same effect on me. I bought it and read it within a day, I think.
I also bought, on a related point, Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter in exactly the same way, from the same WH Smith during a lunchtime visit, although I bought that because I vaguely remembered the Manson killings and I wanted to learn more about them.
When I watched the 1979 film as a nipper I nearly shat myself several times. Watching it again in my 40s I nearly pissed myself laughing several times.

So here I go it's my shot
Feet fail me not
This may be the only opportunity that I got
You better lose yourself

Yes. We have a Boulevard of Broken Dreams. The offices are quite comfortable there.
