This is def a thing. When I was about 12, on family hols, father was called in mid of night to help translate for another Brit family in the hotel who was in agonising death pain. She had a 12 yr old child already.

in the hosp, doc asked father to translate, hiw many months preg? He was reluctant to translate, how can this be??

he eventually did, answer was, from man and wife, fgs, ofc not preg. And then little baby!

made quite a breakfast story.

sis and I knew something was up, cos the hotel recep called our room looking for our father at 2 am. We said, try next door... coudnt imagine what on earth the hotel wanted with him at 2 am. The family in question  had driven to southern Med over about 5 days to destination, parents plus 12 yr old. We did wonder how they got back, passports etc. Turned out, cos the baby (boy) was born in the country abroad, he would be obliged to do national service for that country at 18. We never did find out what happened.
