Chinny question

Are they all idiots?

Most are

they just don’t seem to be when you have something for them that they want.  Or when they have something you want.

but you have to pretend to them that they are wise and professional.  They love that.

Chinny - it's where quite a few from my law degree / LPC ended up when they couldn't get a training contract.

One or two have seemingly done quite well out of it and are probably making more money and have a better work life balance than if they had gone into law.

I have moved firms a few times, but apart from my current role, I had never got a job via a recruiter. Below partner level moves, you don’t ever seem to see the good recruiters.

For partner roles, the best recruiters are engaged by individual firms to research the market, take soundings from others about candidates and come up with shortlists.

The recruiter who I got my current job through does business almost exclusively for my firm. He’s really smart and now has our trust.

Also encountered 2 other good recruiters while speaking to other firms.

The ones I really can’t stand are where they get their assistant to phone you up and say “X would like to know if you would like to hear about an opportunity. If so, I will set up a call.”

If X can’t be bothered to call me himself, and is doing such a high volume of cold calls that it makes sense to outsource the job to you, there is no chance I am working with X.

Pre financial crisis I knew a great guy who called me and when I said I was going travelling asked if he could send his details so I could contact him when I got back which stood out from the usual suspects who hung up as soon as they realised they wouldn't get a commission in the next couple of months.  After I got back we had coffee and he asked what I wanted and what kind of firms I wanted to work for, etc. and he got me a great job and next time I wanted to move I went to him and he worked out a targeted selection of firms to go to which ticked my boxes and where he thought I'd fit in.  Sadly he disappeared once the crisis hit and I suspect ended up doing something else as he was far too nice to be a chinny and no doubt got grief for taking time to find the right job for someone rather than just finding them a job and getting paid.

Yes the guy I use mainly now when hiring has never actually placed me but was a good bloke and was never pushy, he also actually helped with my business case for promotion

So he gets paid several times over but never actually got a commission from me

Well not yet anyway
