Blacklists in Legal Recruitment

Do they (or similar, where agencies keep profiles with certain comments around interaction with candidates) exist?

yes

but it's just a buff folder that is passed around with a tap of the nose and knowing wink and in it is a big picture of Jolyon Mongahan with "Don't fcuking hire!" scrawled across it in bright neon red pen

I cannot decipher these responses.

Do they keep files of individuals so that when you apply for a job, they look up your name and come across comments from 10 years ago such as: "Mr X emailed me asking why I have not responded to his application (he is an entirely suitable candidate). I therefore deem him to be a khunt - DO NOT ASSIST HIM TO FIND WORK..EVER."?

Aren’t there data protection issues around that sort of ‘file’? Ask for it and threaten them with some kind of data protection legal stuff. Then change subject, back to recruitment. That’s what I would do (see supplements for older women thread for more information on that)

"[S]upplements for older women". Sounds intriguing - I am straining to make a connection here.

I dunno how long they can keep this stuff. Do they care about minor breaches of the law? Would they comply with their obligations?

I can't threaten them - they'll eat me.

I am definitely blacklisted. Would anyone like to be kind enough to apply for a job on my behalf to correct this aberration of justice? I'll buy you a drink, be your friend, recruit you when I'm in work - anything really...

What has happened to kindness and compassion?

The firms? Not recruiters? You know, if you try to start a conversation with a recruiter on LinkedIn, the same box will come up with correspondence from years earlier. If not an agreeable one, they are, of course, free to decide whether to respond (regardless of suitability for the role.

I do not see how discrimination can be policed/controlled.

Merkz, if you asked what was happening with your application in an email if you have received no response and, say, the RC still ignored you, what would you do to elicit a response??

Never mind what he would do.  WHAT DID YOU DO?

Lol - I don't remember. Probably just a sarky email and pestering once or twice - which, I think would be pretty valid in the circumstances anyway.

If you are suitable for a position, I think the least a chinzoid could do is respond to you explaining why they did not put you forward for the role - perhaps they could incorporate this in privacy legislation next to the automatic processing and decision making: "if you are a computer or a chinny, you must, upon request from the data subject, provide justification for being a bastard." 20 quid fine if you dont.

@Tom Fun, thanks - they must have had a very good reason to raid those premises to find evidence of the blacklisting (and a good number of people were involved).

adofferent. What a fine word.

Roles are hard to come by. For some reason places still feel the need to use recruiters rather than advertise directly on LinkedIn et al.

Why would they blacklist anybody?  They get commission if the firm hires someone, and if you're the most suitable candidate and increase their chances of submission...they'll work with you.

Chinnies do ignore people though.  Sometimes it's because they don't understand the role they're hiring for.

There was a role that I was super keen on as I knew the hiring manager, team, etc and the chinny (IT) was engaged - for policy reasons.  Absolutely not the right chinny for the role.  I literally had to stalk and harass the chinny to put my CV forward.  I even reached out to the hiring manager.  I beat 300 other candidates to the role.  The chinny and I are now friends.

Isn't always this though. Sometimes they have another candidate who is a bit marginal / iffy. By putting you up too they can make the other candidate look suitable and increase their chances of commission
