The awful truth about wars is that they are boring

People want sport and shopping.

They're exciting in the first days and weeks when it's all missiles blasting off and jets swooping by and big columns of tanks rushing to battle and explosions and suchlike.  Then it turns into grinding attritional warfare with minefields and trenches that drags on for years, or equally grinding counter-insurgency campaigns that drag on for decades, and it all gets a bit yawnerama.
