Mrs G is watching this of an evening (we are somehow at series 5 - who knew?).
I seem to remember watching this as a kid and it being quite funny but fvck me it is terrible. A complete laugh free zone but beyond that creates a visceral reaction for being so testicle shrinkingly terrible which makes me want to destroy the tv with a cricket bat for having the nerve to broadcast it at me.
How on earth was this ever made, and with so many famous people?
Or is it me?

I rewatched some of it over lockdown and still rather enjoyed it.

Absolutely dreadful at the time, and agreed, even worse now.

For me at least, when it first came out it was shockingly and refreshingly unapologetic about how amoral it (or at least Patsy?) can be. (I think there have been some attempts at a US remake but they all flopped or missed the mark because the US just could not embrace the values, or lack thereof, embodied by the original.) But on a rewatch, yeah, the writing is rather lazy and cringe. Some of the celebrity cameos are pretty dire.

I did like the episode where they spent a holiday at the French "chateau" if only for the twist at the end, including the otherwise ditzy secretary's French proficiency.

And Patsy selling Saffy off as a slave in Morocco was worth a chuckle.

Apart from odd bits it was never funny.

I think it was very much a statement of its time. Although, I've met a few real life people very much like Eddie and Patsy, especially at Art Gallery opening nights around Notting Hill (I go for the free wine and canapes).

I remember it being okay
these sort of early evening network sitcoms never date well though
maybe because eveything that comes after builds on them?

lets remember that a huge part of the British population thought Mr Blobby was funny...
I thought it was the most irritating character in history.

Those people still think Mrs. Brown is funny.

Most comedies in the early 1990s were trash. It didn't take much to stand out . Even the finest shows of the era like Men Behaving Badly look pretty rubbish/unfunny now. Martin Clunes even said so in an interview !
When Ab Fab returned in the early 2000s comedy golden era of The Office , Spaced , Peep Show etc it looked shyte and dated

do you include, Oly Fools & Horses, Fr. Ted, Bottom, The New Statesman, Vicar of Dibley in that list?

Only fools and father Ted still stand up.
Junior Grey Area has recently got into Dad’s Army as well.

Dad's Army is fantastic, even with the casual racism of Cpl Jones.

Tastes changes and you’re just reflecting the very odd place sitcoms ar ein these days. Dads Army was seen as laughably naff for decades. Ab Fab was satirising a world that notoriously took it itself oh so seriously but now of course runs the world thru instagram. Go figure.

If we're going as far back as Dad's Army, Yes Minister remains [chef's kiss].
But can we add Red Dwarf to the good 90s comedies please?

Dads Army and The Likely Lads/Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads were IMHO peak BBC ‘golden years’ sitcoms.
