Shakespeares has placed secretaries and support staff across the firm into a redundancy consultation.

A spokesman for the firm insisted "very limited" job losses are expected, but refused to say how many positions are under threat. Insiders tell RollOnFriday other redundancies have recently taken place at the firm, and staff are terrified that they'll be next for the chop.

Amongst others, all six secretaries in the Birmingham office's Insurance department are in the consultation after they turned down the offer of alternative roles. The spokesman declined to confirm what the unpopular alternative roles were (pot plants? Blackberry stands?) and, as an insider told RollOnFriday, presumably it will be down to the fee-earners to open their own files, type up bills and send out letters.

    Shakespeares yesterday

The coming job losses follow a succession of mergers by Shakespeares. This year it's snapped up Marrons in Leicester and Newsome Vaughan in Coventry, and it is now second only in size to Wragge & Co in the region. But as other recently merged firms are discovering, redundancies are part of the package. When Shakespeares merged with Harvey Ingram last year, 54 job losses resulted.

Suddenly glad I left Bevan Brittan when I did or that could have been me!

I feel sorry for all the people at risk as the job market for secretarial staff is not what it used to be.

I wish them all luck.

Whoever the insider is I would love to shake their hand for showing the firm the loyal and long serving staff.

The alternative roles were the same jobs but with big pay cuts. In one case a drop of £7,500. The 6 secretaries had over 100 years service at the firm between them. They all decided they wanted to go straight away which left the department with no-one who knew how to open a file and no admin support.

Shows how they treat loyal and long serving staff who between them had over 100 years of experience.

Unfortunately it's not just limited to The Birmingham office, the same is happening at Leicester! What a shame they will lose good, loyal staff, still their loss is someone else's gain!

What planet is person who made last comment on! turning down an offer to do the same job for up to £7,500 less has nothing to do with lack of loyalty!

Obviously the person who made the comment "can't be that loyal - they left" is obviously high up on the food chain. Would they stand for a big drop in salary all because they change their job title. Shakespeares would still expect the same service that a secretary would provide but want to call it an administrator job in order to save money. You can only push loyality so far before it breaks. Change of job title and salary was the last insult Shakespeares threw at these poor secretaries.

In layman's terms haven't put brain into motion before coming out with their comment.

Don't forget Milton Keynes and Newport Pagnell in the redundancies! As if a record breaking year 48 mill turnover isn't enough...
