A New Zealand lawyer has been killed in London after being crushed by a betting shop sign.

Jacob Marx, an insurance and corporate disputes lawyer at Minter Ellison, died on Monday. He was walking down Camden Road when a 30-foot metal William Hill hoarding was blown free in a gust of wind and collapsed on top of him. Six pedestrians managed to lift off the hoarding to enable paramedics to reach the 27 year old, but on arrival at hospital he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Marx was taking a break from law to travel around the world with his girlfriend, Natalie Chung. The pair were working in London to raise money for the next stage of their once-in-a-lifetime trip when Marx was killed.  A Minter Ellison spokesman told the Evening Standard that "Marx was a bright young lawyer who worked hard, produced excellent quality work and made lots of friends at our firm. Our thoughts are with his parents and his family".

Witnesses claimed the hoarding had been dangerously loose for weeks because of botched maintenance work and rotten wooden supports. A police investigation has been launched.
