Allens Arthur Robinson and Mallesons have become the first Australian law firms to be accredited as Fairtrade Workplaces.
The accreditation was announced as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs until 16th May. The firms received the honour after committing to source all their hot drinks for clients and staff from Fair Trade suppliers. So lawyers pulling all nighters will at least be able to enjoy their mugs of black coffee with a clear conscience.
For those not familiar with the concept, Fairtrade Certified products meet internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards. These are designed to correct the imbalance in power in trading relationships (between rich and poor) and unstable markets. The net effect is that growers in poorer countries are paid more fairly. At least that's the theory.
A spokesman for Mallesons said “We are proud to be recognised for our commitment to Fairtrade and we will continue our efforts to make a tangible difference to the lives of growers, producers and communities in developing countries.”
Allens and Mallesons join a raft of leading corporates who have been recognised as Fairtrade workplaces, such as Twinkle Lily (manufacturers of nappies and sanitary towels) and The Aware Network (purveyors of handmade South American Indian shoes).
