Melbourne firm Logie-Smith Lanyon has appointed Australia's first consultant in Sharia law.

Sheikh Mohamadu Nawas, a former lecturer in law at the International Islamic University Malaysia, will focus on commercial contract compliance and family matters. The move has been prompted by increased demand for Sharia compliant dispute resolution and financial products amongst Melbourne's Muslim community. Nawas stressed that any advice given would be entirely compatible with Australian law, and would be limited to civil rather than criminal matters.

Several law firms in the UK have long had sizeable Islamic finance practices, and this has become a growth area. Hyder Gulam, a senior lawyer at Logie-Smith Lanyon, told the Age that ''it's big business. (Assistant Treasurer) Nick Sherry went to the Middle East recently to promote Australia as Sharia-friendly for finance and investment."
