A research study has found that Australia is the third most popular destination for international lawyers globally.

The 2010 Hydrogen Global Professionals on the Move report was based on a survey of 3,155 mid and senior level professionals earning an average $125,000. Australia fought off stiff competition from the Middle East, Continental Europe and wider Asia but was still pipped by perennial favourites the USA and UK.

The writers of the report claim that many UK lawyers now see a posting abroad as a way of improving their partnership prospects. Although a shortage of work in London was probably a consideration for many. Either way, it seems Australia is an attractive prospect for those sick of unfortunate weather and an under-performing cricket team.

According to a spokeswoman for Hydrogen Group “For many qualified lawyers, a stint abroad in a busier market is now an unofficial step on the ladder to making partner in London. In addition, the recession has driven many in the sector to look overseas to secure a position. There is also the perception among lawyers that there is more of a work-life balance to be had overseas - some lawyers who move abroad are reluctant to return.
