2010 has started with a bang for lawyers at Latham & Watkins, after the firm announced pay rises for its associates.

Latham froze pay a year ago and subsequently made 440 staff redundant. But its view of the market has improved to such an extent that it has now announced modest salary rises. Pay for new joiners has risen by around 4% from $154,000 to $160,000, while a lawyer who joined in 2002 will now be earning a handy $280,000, the abovethelaw blog reckons. Which should keep the wolf from the door.

    Not at Latham there isn't...

Pay will go up at the firm's offices around the world, so lawyers in London will also be toasting a happy new year. With salary reviews taking place at most City firms over the next few months this is an early promising sign.
