Last year RollOnFriday Community Action teamed up with the Law Society and LawWorks to set up the LawWorks Choices project. This week, it celebrates a hugely successful first year with almost £700,000 of free advice having been given by over 600 generous lawyers.

The scheme has managed to kill an entire flock of birds with a single stone. Participants - qualified solicitors made redundant in the turbulent market - have been able to keep their legal skills up to scratch and their CVs bulging. And numerous charities, law centres and otherwise unrepresented individuals have received the benefit of the experience and qualifications of all involved.

Thanks are due to the Law Society, who generously stumped up for free pro bono practising certificates for the first 100 participants. And to LawWorks who arranged professional indemnity insurance and free expert training for the volunteer lawyers. But thanks most of all to all the RoF readers who have taken part.

Happy birthday dear RollOnFriday Community Action, happy birthday to you

And volunteers haven't just had a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Prolific participants are guaranteed interviews (or at least have their applications given extra credence by participation) at a number of major firms. Many have had interviews and RollOnFriday knows of at least one who will soon be starting a job.
