A partner has resigned from the firm which he founded, after being arrested in an SFO probe.

Alan Whiteley, together with fellow partner Eric Evans, was suspended from Cardiff firm M&A Solicitors last week. On Monday Whiteley resigned from the partnership, and the firm issued a statement to say that "Evans' contract with the firm was ended". So no buggering about with innocent until proven guilty then...

Whiteley's a big name. He founded the firm, which now has some 70 staff, after leaving Eversheds, and he's company secretary of Cardiff City football club. Local media delightedly reported that he lives in a "mansion" and has a silver Aston Martin with personalised plates. His arrest followed an investigation into the sale of coal mines in South Wales, and came about after an operation by four separate police forces.

M&A Solicitors said that it "acted diligently by referring matters to the authorities, and the Serious Fraud Office's investigation follows on from our referral. We are co-operating with the Serious Fraud Office's investigation and due to the on-going nature of that investigation we are unable to provide further information at this time."
