In breaking news RollOnFriday has learnt that Norton Rose is set to take over Deneys Reitz, one of South Africa’s largest firms, and Canadian corporate outfit Ogilvy Renault.

The two firms will formally join the Norton Rose Group  - and are expected to adopt the Norton Rose name - on 1 June 2011, taking the firm's head count  to over 2,500 lawyers spread over 38 offices. And it seems quite a coup. With over 140 lawyers and having scooped African firm of the year in 2006, Deneys Reitz is a big player in South Africa. And Ogilvy Renault, a corporate firm with nearly 450 lawyers, also appears to be quite a big fish.

Norton Rose stamps its name on South Africa

Norton Rose Chief Executive Peter Martyr is clearly pretty chuffed, saying "This is a very exciting move...Canada and South Africa are increasingly influential economies for our clients in the energy and natural resources, infrastructure, technology and financial institutions sectors." And presumably Norton Rose lawyers will be pleased about some exciting new secondment options.

Following on from last year’s merger with Aussie firm Deacons, the move shows that Norton Rose is serious about its international ambitions.
