Where did it all go wrong? Sandwiches were supposed to be one of the great British inventions. The joyful combination of everything we hold dear, meat and carbs, slapped together in a lazy manner for ease of consumption without interrupting gambling/working. As we type this we can hear the faint sounds of Rule Britannia...

That was how it all started anyway. Nowadays, sandwiches are a sorry excuse for a quick lunch; anonymous flimsy greyed meat hastily squashed between bits of papery mush masquerading as bread. Even then, you are only permitted to eat it after it has been allowed to sweat for several days in plastic packaging. And, once clasped in grubby hands, they are devoured quickly and apologetically as a short distraction from work.

Seriously, where did it all go so wrong?

Not even Presidents are safe from Desk-Lunch Doom

Lunch should be a celebration. It's an hour long break from work; permitted by statute but justified by right. It should be an event to bring friends together for conversation, fun and even frolics. We should be permitted to enjoy it lazily whilst moaning about our bosses without interruption.

Actually, we'll settle for it being tasty. In Borough Market's Roast To Go, we have a champion. The theory is simple enough; quality meat roasted fresh each day and put together in a soft roll with sauces that are sparingly applied. All of it tenderly constructed right before your widening eyes and watering mouth.

The beef rolls and fish finger sandwiches always look good, but the real star of the show is the belly of pork (with crackling) in a roll. It's amazing, but be sure to be forthright with the server and avoid getting the end of the slab (which can sometimes be a little dry). Just politely ask for a fresh slab which appears, as if by magic, dripping in its succulent fatty juices. We're also partial to the amazing sausage rolls.

One small warning though: Be prepared to queue, especially on Fridays when most people are roaming the Market. Thankfully, unlike most of the Market, it's open Monday - Saturday so you can wander down for a treat on any day you like. Well, except Sunday.
