a thread to observe weird word stuff

why is it deceased when it isn't the opposite of ceased?

I will be using the word "gruntled" a lot now.  I started by just saying to a trainee I was gruntled with his work - he looked a bit crestfallen.  I told him to look it up.

We went to go and see Suzy Dent's tour and my favourite was her explanation of the phrase "stealing someone's thunder". Also spoke about some words whose twins were now lost (lonely negatives). See impeccable, dishevelled etc...

It was very interesting, I hope she does another one (so does Mr D but for other reasons...ha!)

According to Mr D, she is. He has quite the crush - probably ever since he sat next to her in Avignon airport about a decade ago. Ha. Also because she's all wordy and grammar-tastic, he likes that even more. Bless him. She's in her mid 50s, amazingly.

For years Ms. Dent was the reason to watch Count Down.

I have previously described myself as gruntled.  Shevelled also sounds like a good word for describing a state of being reasonably tidily dressed.
