Sweet but Psycho by Ava Max

This is getting loads of airplay on Heart (Yorkshire version) at the mo for some reason.

I have to say that, objectively awful as it is, it’s exactly the kind of song I find completely irresistible. It’s completely unoriginal and totally lacking in any kind of creative merit EXCEPT for the fact that it’s got such a lovely, just absolutely lovely ear worm of a tune. I will be singing this fooker for weeks. It’s got a million dollar hook - kind of song, you must sit back after the ten minutes it takes to create it, listen to it through and think “well that’s the mortgage paid off”.

I just can't get over the fact that she was unable to find a rhyming word for psycho and so just repeated it in the next line as if it were a different word, daring you, the listener, to call her out on it.

She is literally gas lighting us in the song.

Christ she is a genius.

After due consideration, I have no qualms about pronouncing this song’s falling, rising and drifting post-chorus groove:

grab-a-cop’s-gun kinda -crazy / she’s poison but tasty / and people say run don’t walk away

as the single most beautiful, not to say the most mercilessly effective and narcotically addictive, ten seconds of commercial pop music of the last five years. It’s like Lady Gaga (who I think is absolutely fooking brilliant btw) without the vague pretence of artistic credibility.
