I am currently reading a police procedural crime novel, and one of the detectives has given someone a few tenners for info. So something that I have wondered about for a while is do the coppers expense this or is it out of their own pocket?

if one expenses it, how much details is required on the expenses form.

They can always pay out of their own pockets if they want but police forces do spend millions a year on paying for information. There are even oversight committees to monitor it.
