Ministers presumably aren't subject matter experts (in most cases) so they rely on their officials to know whether or not a proposed action is illegal and to tell them.
Once while visiting the Forest Moon Endor, I was mistaken for a god by small bears, organised them into a militia and overthrew an evil galactic empire... by accident. Only went for a weekend break.
Stories like this just make me feel old as I remember when this would have been a resigning matter but expecting her to show some accountability would be barking up the wrong drone.
And the reason why this is not a resigning matter for Liz Truss is that, believe it or not, she is probably one of the least insane and most competent Conservative MPs sufficiently lacking in principles to accept a post in the Bodge Job cabinet.

Massive heh @ the idea that ministers listen and follow the advice of their officials when they are told that things are illegal.

"Economical with the actualite" was the phrase used by the late, great Alan Clark
Of course, if exports to Saudi tail off, Labour voters will be the first to start screaming about "austerity" and "Tory cuts"

And if exports to the EU and any country the EU has a free trade agreement with tail off, who will be to blame?

Are you kidding? She’s completely inane with virtually no knowledge of, well, anything really.

I said "one of the least insane and most competent".
This is the Tory party we are talking about. Everything is relative.
