Happened to be in church on Sunday just gone. There was an almighty rendition of "immortal invisible" which massively took me back to school days. The Welsh are enthusiastic singers which of course helps create atmosphere.
Got me thinking though. Hymns, sung heartily, are wonderful things.
Anyone got any favourites?

Mine are:
1. For All the Saints (sadly usually only sung on 1st Nov)
2. Guide Me O Thou Gr8 Redeemer (another Welsh classic)
3. He Who Would Valiant Be

Strong suggestions. This time of year, I might have to throw in "plough the fields and scatter"

I love hymns so it's hard to choose.
Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer, Be Thou My Vision, Tell Out My Soul, I Vow To Thee My Country, Abide With Me... are some of my favourites.
Love Christmas carols too.

'Praise My Soul The King of Heaven' and 'Onward Christian Soldiers' are two we used to belt out in the school chapel.

Of course Jerusalem also gets a mention.

The missus always seems surprised that as an atheist I always know the words of hymns sung at weddings, christenings and more often now it seems funerals. You don't forget a religious upbringing and 14 years of education by the church. Me - possibly Thine Be The Glory.

"Praise my soul the king of heaven" and "thine be the glory" are proper bangers.
"O God our help in ages past" anyone?

Oh yeah Buzz, that's a good one. I like the uplifting ones.
But fooking Jerusalem goes in Room 101 for me.

Got to be to be a pilgrim or bread of heaven for me Clive. With a mention for Jerusalem and when a knight won his spurs but someone will obv say they are not hymns.
Also a nod to kumbaya and if I had a hammer. Wt actual f is that shyt about? Particularly the hammer one.
I blame Hampshire primaries pandering to non conformist types.
in my town other than traditional RC types, you had your United reform, your Methodists, your Baptists, your evangelical free church (Probably third in congregation size and properly weird) and the Plymouth brethren and a splinter brethren (forget the name) and the JoHos.
Every Saturday morning you could go to the high st and see at each end the differing brethren preaching. Whole families from 4 to 80 odd protestyling (sp?).
Sadly (or maybe not) this was the era of Harry enfield's Loadsamoney - so Every time a black wee bible was held forth like a ref with a red card admin you to repent, some teen joker would shout "look at my wodge"...
Was well embarassing for their kids in your class on the Monday morning.

'splinter brethren'= exclusive brethren
There was a good mate at school in that. For him it was just a scam. Could plead this when asked to do anything unpleasant

Ave Maria always reminds me of Father Ted being put on hold phoning the bishop.
