A New Zealand judge has sent defendants out of court for wearing flip-flops.

Judge Michael Turner was presiding at a hearing at the Alexandra District Court when he berated seven defendants for wearing sandals, shorts and singlets in court. He ordered them to get changed into more suitable attire.

The judge lambasted the defendants reminding them that they were in a courtroom "not a beach". He added that even though it was hot outside, there were certain standards to be maintained.

The defendants were advised by their lawyers to either go home and get changed or source new clothes in a nearby shop.
