An Indian lawyer has sent a legal notice to the internet messaging service Whatsapp stating that one of their emoji symbols is illegal.

Lawyer Gurmeet Singh, who practices in New Delhi, said that the emoji depicting the swear sign of a middle finger was "highly belligerent, invasive, obscene and lewd".

He added that it would if it was sent to a woman, it would be an offence under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code which forbids a "word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman".

WhatsApp considered its response combining a knob and a jockey emoji. How it might have looked.

Singh requested that WhatsApp remove the emoji from the service within 15 days. He said that if the emoji was not removed, he would file a civil or criminal case against WhatsApp.
