Clients phoning the switchboard of White & Case's London office will have their calls answered in Manila.

Now that everyone has a direct dial, switchboards are less busy than they were. Indeed, demand has fallen so sharply that there is just one lady answering the phones in W&C's London office. When she's busy or out of the office the calls are picked up in the Philippines, and the firm has confirmed that the entire function is being off-shored.

Apparently this is because of the cost savings involved. Hmm. How much can really be saved by getting rid of one switchboard operator? Actually, probably a fair bit given that salaries for call centre workers in Manila can be as low as US$300 a month...

A spokeswoman for the firm said that "the volume of calls to the London switchboard has dropped significantly due to the increased use of email, direct dial and mobiles. The switchboard has been jointly operated out of our Manila affiliate and the London office for the past few years and now all in-bound calls will be answered in Manila."
