Construction and Engineering Solicitor (5 years' plus PQE)

The role

The Muckle Construction, Engineering and Projects Team has a broad and varied spread of interesting and demanding cross sector projects, acting for clients based in the North East, the UK and overseas. We act for the full range of clients involved in the construction process; owners/occupiers, their investors and funders, developers, contractors, consultants and sub-contractors.

We provide focused, practical and commercial advice on construction, engineering and infrastructure projects, from project inception, through the procurement and tender stages, contract completion and beyond. We also provide support to other teams in the business, in particular our procurement, real estate, commercial and corporate teams, on the construction aspects of their transactions, such as due diligence and contract drafting.

The Team is focused on non-contentious construction and project development work. You will become a key member of the Team, supporting the Partners in the Team in delivering these projects and with responsibility for the mentoring and supervision of junior fee earners. However, as we have an increasing workload of construction  and engineering disputes, your role will also include assisting our Dispute Resolution Team in resolving these disputes, as the need arises.

So who are we looking for?  We are looking for someone who has both non-contentious and contentious construction experience with 5 years plus PQE, gained at a respected commercial firm and who has a keen interest in business development and developing themselves and the more junior fee earners in the team. The successful candidate should be experienced in dealing with the full range of industry form contracts documents (such as NEC and JCT), as well as advising on construction law and strategy in relation to claims and ideally, with experience in adjudications and dispute resolution in the Technology and Construction Court. An ability to pick up some general commercial disputes work would be useful.

Due to the Firm’s investment in technology and belief in the benefit of agile working we welcome candidates from both in and outside of the North East.

The Muckle Team

Muckle LLP is the leading North East law firm for business. With nearly 150 people, we are the biggest commercial law firm that is based solely in, and focused on, the North East.  The Projects and Dispute Resolution Teams are key parts of this wider team. We all work together in one open plan office so there are no closed doors, just close working relationships.

We have a specialist practice that provides business people with first-class expert advice.  We are dedicated to providing our clients with the best advice and service that we possibly can.  We combine City-quality advice with the friendly, collegiate feel of the North East.  We know that each client is different and each of our specialist teams consistently offers enthusiasm and expertise tailored for specific needs and situations.  The right advice is only right for that client; there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Historically, we had invested significantly to promote agile working, with our people having the ability to work from wherever suited them best, which we all did already long before the COVID-19 lockdown. This flexibility allowed us to move all of our operation seamlessly to home working last March, without disrupting our service delivery. We continue to operate to the same excellent levels of service that existed pre-lockdown, providing legal services to a wide range of organisations throughout the UK and beyond. Beyond lockdown, we will continue to operate our agile working policy, also taking advantage of our excellent, modern office facilities, where these help us to deliver excellent service to each other and to our clients.

Our people and values

Our people are the foundation of our business, and everything we do is underpinned by our four core values:

  • Trust – we trust each other to do the right thing
  • Teamwork – we are one team and work selflessly for each other
  • Responsibility – we are self-starters and take responsibility for how we work together and communicate
  • Care – we care about our people, clients and community

It means, no matter who you speak to, we provide the same excellent service from people who do what they say, on time and on budget, every time. That’s the Muckle way.

Our culture

We care deeply about our local community too and create lots of opportunities for employees to give back and make a difference. For example, you could use your two days’ paid volunteering leave to support a local cause you care about or nominate them to receive a grant from our charitable fund at the Community Foundation.

From workplace running, cycling and walking clubs to fun events organised by our BEAM (Being Engaged At Muckle) team, we’ve created a unique culture which has been recognised by a number of awards:

  • Investors In People Gold award accreditation
  • Investors In People Health and Wellbeing accreditation
  • North East Better Health at Work Gold award
  • 6th Best Place to Work in the North East at the Journal’s awards in 2019 and have won numerous awards for our community work.

So how does all that sound? If you’re looking to work in a friendly, open environment and want to develop your career in a forward thinking, commercial North East law firm, then this is an excellent opportunity.
