With the Open closing in fast we decided to check out some suitable places to watch it in style - and where better than an indoor tribute to golf.

As a general rule of thumb, simulation doesn't tend to be as good as the real thing: driving simulators, football computer games, Quorn, imaginary girlfriends - all are good, great even, but they're not quite as good as the Real Thing. However, there are times when you just have to make do with simulation - a great example is when looking for some good golf in London.

Metrogolf, strictly speaking, isn't a true simulation of golf, it's actually a different game entirely. Sure, the motion is the same, but players often remark how different it feels and how the shots themselves come out differently when interpreted on the screen. Personally, we seem to be better at simulation rather than real golf, it must be the well stocked bar next to the tee box.

Indoor golf has come a long way in recent years with numerous outlets and clubs opening throughout central London and the City. Often, they conform to a simple formula; clean and sleek interiors with a huddle of golf bays. We don't know about you, but we've found that hanging out there can get a little expensive with the pricey hourly rates and ice cold beers.

Thankfully, therefore, Metrogolf seems slightly different with a more relaxed set up. It's not as corporate as some of its competitors, but that means it keeps things simple and can feel much friendlier. Mainly though, the prices are cheaper (though that might be because of its location in Paddington Basin, just a short skip from Paddington Station), but more than that, the whole place seems relaxed and a great place to hang out. There's also a large projector screen permanently fixed on a sports channel to keep you entertained whilst your companions hack their way out of the virtual rough. Where better to watch the pros hack around this weekend?
