Monday morning. First coffee down, time to digest this week's thrilling edition of The Lawyer. Pausing only to bin the special Lawyer Awards supplement - a glossy pamphlet packed with orgiastic images of porcine blaggards - The Source turns directly to page 12 to review the movements of solicitors in Walmington-on-Sea, Greendale and the Isle of Sodor.

Amongst news of major losses at Stone King Sewell and Horsey Lightly, one move in particular catches the eye.

People change firms for plenty of reasons. More money, a promotion, more money, a nicer office, more attractive colleagues and more money, better stationary, toilets which are stocked with loo roll, more money. And - obviously - job security. A prized commodity in the current market.

So what exactly was it - The Source wonders - that made young Heather Caddy move from HBJ Gateley Wareing to - of all places - Halliwells?

By now, surely everyone is aware that it's not exactly the best of times at the former regional powerhouse. In fact, such is the level of despair, it looks increasingly likely that the firm will cease to exist PDQ.

Heather Caddy has a tricky first day at Halliwells

And circling the wreckage - USS Indianapolis-style - are Barlow Lyle & Gilbert and Hill Dickinson.

And HBJ Gately Wareing.

Just what is going on here? Has Heather been sent deep undercover as a mole? Is she storming the beaches, Saving Private Ryan style? Is she the chosen one, sent to will save the firm and its dwindling partnership?

Or is this simply the most poorly-judged career move since Fabio Capello took on the England job?
