Why is the media so obsessed with the Oscars

Even the nominations are reported as major news despite the fact that very very few people could give the tiniest shit about an industry awards ceremony with awards largely determined by the most successful PR agency in any event.

broadcast media are obsessed with the media. Take obituaries, for example. Compare the BBC news editor's choice of who they do an obit on with the decisions made by the broadsheets.

When did you last see an item on the TV news about the death of a serviceman who not many had heard of but turned out to have led the raid on the u-boat pens in nothing but his pants, or a bishop or an architect or painter, the head of the civil service, a great head teacher or university professor?

Conversely, how many times have we heard the tv news tell us a version of the sad story of plucky variety comedian and celebrated racist paedo, Jimmy Widdle MBE, who kept us so amused on Saturday nights in the 1970s and spent the closing decades of his life protesting his innocence from HMP Knacker, but wasn't he funny and here are some clips of his use of his famous tag line "you'll have someone's eye out with that mister".

Jimmy Widdle, who died today.
