Remembered as the first woman in the US Supreme Court but before that was the first woman to be majority leader in any US state legislature.

When they were on the Stanford Law Review together Chief Justice Rehnquist had asked her to marry him and she had turned him down. They ended up together on the US Supreme Court for 25 years.
