I can understand the decent, small batch places charging more - but this is for filter isn't it? It's not a fair comparison to a espresso (more labour, expensive machines, more machine maintenance, and the milk steamed by hand etc.).
I don't mind paying £3 for a high-end product, but none of the chains sell a high-end product.
I drink it every day because it's cheap but it definitely doesn't taste the same as an espresso-based drink.
But Pret are selling it as a loss-leader because they know a significant number of the people who come in for it will buy food too. There's no way a place that's focused on coffee could cover their costs at 99p a cup.

Its fine - there is no difference between their coffee and starbucks or Café Nero or Costa.

I much prefer Pret filtered coffee to the Americanos they serve at Costa/Nero.
