Yes, we always pay for 3 places at Crisis for Christmas, one for each of us. Nice to think that whilst we're tucking into our Christmas dinner, we've supported the same for some others less fortunate.
The FT's pick usually seems good enough for me but this year it is Habitat for Humanity which builds houses for people in, inter alia, the US and Canada. I may look further afield.
I prefer to give food or money directly to homeless people rather than to homeless charities. If they spend it on drugs or alcohol, I can't say I really blame them.
No I just have a selection of charities that I give to as and when I can and also I'm a sucker for sponsoring anyone I know who's doing something for charity.
I want to ask without sounding generally sneering and/or condescend about this, so please take this in the spirit of curiosity rather than anything else...
When I was working I had very little time for charity. I did a bit for various local things over the course of the year, but I never did anything extra or special at Christmas.
As has been documented in Rof Passim I do help out a few charities on a weekly basis now, as well as fundraiser via a couple of local organizations of which I am a member. However still, I don’t actually doing extra over Christmas.
Do you guys normally give to charity and this is a bonus because you want to treat folks slightly over the festive period? Or is this the only time you really bother with it?
I do take your question as legit curiosity, same as my own in starting the thread.
My compromise is that 7% of my annual income goes to three charities doing education and development projects in v poor countriesies. 10% is traditional but personal selfishness kicked in v strongly at the 7% level. So, to ease myself up to I go with my less rational, more local reaction to homelessness in winter. It's winter, rather than Xmas.
I tend to go with a scattergun approach to giving to homeless people (or charity fundraising events) throughout the year, with something more specific like Shelter or Crisis at Christmas.
I usually send mencap a few quid as, for family reasons, they are sort of associated with Christmas in my mind.
I used to make a point of giving the Salvation Army a few quid I saw them because my grandfather (who was fiercely atheist and otherwise very anti church) used do so because they had helped some people he had known as a kid.
Then I realized just how mentally homophobic they were and stopped.
I've got monthly standing orders to a handful of charities and ignored Christmas appeals until last year when it was so bloody cold that I was shamed into giving an extra gift to a homeless charity. I will do the same this year.
Thanks Gwenllian, and I said the figure to encourage other people, but people evidently used to treat 10% as the norm judging by the consistency of that figure from Judaism, through to Christianity and on into Islam.

this year is tight for me.
Will still have lunch with a homeless as always but other than that nothing. Maybe buy Xmas cards from a charity.

Will do better next year.
