AMOC collapse imminent

Is anyone following the news on this over the past couple of months?

Given that the western seaboard of Europe, including the British Isles, will be most affected, I'm surprised that it's not getting more attention.

A 2 degree Celsius increase in British Isles might not be good but would be manageable (obviously less mangeable in many other parts of the globe). However, if there's a collapse of the AMOC we're actually going to see a bigger decrease in temperatures.

I have family in Newfoundland, which is the same latitude as southern England, and if we have the same temperatures as them it's going to be a whole different life.

Glad I have an EU passport.

The underlying warming trend is likely to outweigh any circulation anomalies by the time this takes effect.

I really can't see the UK suddenly having freezing winters in a global climate that is +3-4C Vs the 1951-80 average (ie what we will probably have by 2100)

 

Even if we start drawing in air from colder directions this air will itself be warmer than decades ago. We are already seeing this in the winter months , we can now get very mild winters with pretty ordinary synoptics and you need proper easterlies from the coldest depths of Russia to get proper winter weather.

 

I can however see the Guardian etc trotting this out in the event of the UK/W Europe having a cold winter in the 2009-10 style in the next few years , even though any climate scientist worth their salt (no pun intended) will tell you a change like this will not happen overnight and can't be linked to an individual winter 

 

In any case the idea that it will "suddenly collapse" is Day After Tomorrow style palpbable nonsense

 

Nobody sensible is predicting a day after tomorrow collapse, hth. 

Also, forget the temperature variances in specific locations (ooohh we can grow champagne in Suffolk now cool) and think about the consequences of sea level rises pushing hundreds of millions of refugees around the world.

AGW - yes generally agreed on

AMOC - no such consensus and alot of trash /hysteria being posted about it lately . I did read an article in The Guardian saying it could collapse by 2025 so actually that does border on Day After Tomorrow territory

I suppose if you only have imaginary children that’s fair enough 

When they say ‘fine’ do they take into account the harm in our overall standard of living that will happen year on year or is that just the point where the whole world turns to ash?
