Alex scott

Firmly with Digby Jones on this one.

She’s possibly the only person on earth with a more annoying accent than Rylan.

1. She is very pretty isn’t she

2. I consider her quite a good pundit and I think she knows a lot about the game.

3. If - I haven’t read the stories in full - Sir Diggers (or whatever he goes by now) was just criticising her pronunciation of words, then tbh I don’t see what’s so massively offensive about that tbh.

Are you saying Megan rapinoe doesn’t meet you cis hetero male subjective standards of perceived patriarchal attractiveness? Have a fooking word with yourself.
I hadn’t even noticed the ‘th’ thing, but now you mention it…

it’s just the utter inability to say a ‘g’ at the end of words.

her response is that she’s proud of her working class roots. Good for you. Nothing wrong with that, but being working class doesn’t mean having to have a shit accent.

the proper working classes of yesteryear as well many today will doubtless abhor her butchery of the language and her contribution to lowering standards. But, no, apparently we have to celebrate it.

absolutely - all working class people should try and hide those roots by adopting a new accent and mannerisms.  There's only one thing for people who don't hide their roots!

WHY IS SHE NOT ASHAMED TO BE DIFFERENT?!   HER DIFFERENCES MAKE ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE AND I DON'T LIKE IT!  WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE PRETENDING TO TALK LIKE WOT HER MAJ DUZ!?

tbh, I mock her for trying to EFFECTIVELY and STRAIGHTFORWARDLY apply some MANNER OF ENTIRELY false DICTION to IMPRESSIFY AND INDEED ESSENTIALLY make THE CITIZENS AND PEOPLES ACQUIRE an GREATER UNDERSTANDIFACTION OF her new FOUND but never lost poshness.

Meh, she's the best female commentator/pundit there is in England.

Unfortunately a bunch of lawyers complaining about her working class accent isn't a great look.

This is why I speak different at work to at home...

Remember when you tried this tack before, Judy?

You went two-footed into "criticism of Ms Patel can only be racism" and then the entire world (all nations, races and creeds) maked it super clear that it's not her skin colour that makes her so hated, it's the calculating and not very bright evil that lurks within her?

And remember how you were so annoyed you did a 3 day never to return flounce?

Remember that?

Would lord pudding criticise an ethnically Chinese pundit for struggling to pronounce their 'R's? Well maybe but that's because he is a major twit. Most decent people wouldn't and he should wind bit in about Alex Scott, as should half the bellends on here.

What Digby Lord Jones fails to understand is that a very large Tory contingent is massively in favour of huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’, pronounced thus.

They often, coincidentally, share Priti Patel’s fondness for hangin’ and floggin’.

What people object to with Priti is not that she is a British subject of (Ugandan) Asian descent.

It’s that she’s a thick, fascistoid khunt. But then, so are quite a lot of the Brexit-voting electorate. So in a way, she’s entirely representative.

Seems you don't remember it at all.

Alex Scott is a nice person. So I have no issue with her. If someone is awful and you think that everyone should be nice to them because it's a racism. I think you don't quite understand what racism is, and seem to be saying that all people from different races are the same and should all be treated as simply super.

Ms Scott’s accent is pure East London. There’s nothing particularly “ethnic” about it so the comparison to Chinese speakers having pronunciation difficulties seems misplaced.

Although, perusing her wiki entry, it would appear that Threepwood is unlikely to be offered an opportunity to kiss her on the lips, as she likes ladies and indeed is married to one.

That is not what I said at all.

what I said then and repeat now is that a lot of people who consider themselves “woke” and right thinking pile on Priti because of their latent racist tendencies that they get an absolute thrill out of but can’t express it elsewhere. PP is their vent as it were. This is similar to misogynistic men who take up the cause of transsexuals.

JoH, you've missed my point slightly. I wasn't saying Alex Scott was ethnic I was saying that criticism of the accent someone was brought up with is out of line. The fact she is working class, black and female could be a factor in puddings thinking but who knows?

I would like to go on record:

  • My dislike of Priti Patel has nothing to do with her skin colour.
  • I don't care whether she pronounces the g when she says "we should be drowning the immigrants".
  • Anyone who suggests that in order to be on TV you either need to be a posh white person or make an effort to speak like one is a twot.

I mean it stands to reason that if there is an element of racism and misogyny in people having a go at Alex Scott (and I'm sure there is) then there is equally an element of racism and misogyny in attacks on Priti Patel.

That can be true and it can also be true that AS is a crap presenter (no idea whether this is true) and priti Patel is a nasty horror

Not sure that really holds water, judo. TMay was widely detested/criticised as Home Secretary (for good reasons - ‘hostile environment’ and the Windrush affair go back to her time as well as those truly vile “go home” message boards on vans) and she’s as white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant as they come.

Not sure many Home Secretaries have been regarded as particularly liberal in recent times, in fairness. Amber Rudd quite liberal for a Tory, I suppose. But even under New Labour, the Home Secretaries were often criticised as authoritarian (Straw, Blunkett, Clarke, Reid, Jackboot Jacqui); and prior to New Labour, Michael Howard not exactly a model of tender, liberal sensibilities.

"I mean it stands to reason that if there is an element of racism and misogyny in people having a go at Alex Scott (and I'm sure there is) then there is equally an element of racism and misogyny in attacks on Priti Patel."

Not really, it's pretty obvious that a hard right Home Sec intent on drowning immigrants would draw more ire than someone who commentates on sport. You wouldn't say "it stands to reason that if there is an element of anti- German xenophobia in people having a go at Jurgen Klinsmann then there is equally an element of anti-German xenophobia in having a go at Hitler"

And yeah yeah I know, Godwin's law etc, I'm not suggesting she's directly comparable to Hitler, just making the point by exaggeration

Exactly what shatner said ffs.

Being critical of a BAME person is not doing a racism.

Being critical of a woman is not doing a misogyny.

Some people who do both of the above may be either racist or misogynists.

But to excuse appalling behaviour by screaming racism or misogyny is a hallmark of the right and is exactly what they criticise what they see as the wOKE brIGAde for.

Patel is somewhat further to the right and more authoritarian than any of her recent predecessors; and the legislative proposals of this government that she is enthusiastically sponsoring are pretty inimical to fundamental liberties, judicial independence and civil and human rights in a way that would have been difficult to conceive even of Michael Howard (a QC) being comfortable endorsing.

The subject of the initial post has a pretty authentic, unreconstructed East London way of speaking (as do plenty of her male equivalents). The suspicion with Patel is that she is capable of speaking in a more neutral/polished way but chooses to affect an Estuary English accent for political reasons of her own. I have no way of knowing whether this is true/fair, but I have no doubt whatsoever that she is not feigning support for the increasingly and worryingly authoritarian agenda of this abysmal shitshow and laughable excuse for an “administration”, she means every last word of it.

Anyway, we’re digressing somewhat from the topic in hand.

Steve Bell is a 🔔 🔚

What’s your point?

Cartoonists for right wing papers have done similarly tasteless, if not far worse, things. I doubt you would accept arguments that those are representative of all “non-Woke” views. Or indeed that Mr Bell would characterise himself as “woke”.

I don't understand the problem. Loads of presenters have regional accents and it's never been a problem. What is the problem here?

I like Alex Scott as a presenter - she seems genuinely cheerful and is very engaging.

If you watch my link, Pinkus, you will discover that it's nothing to do with her accent. Digby Jones himself is from humble beginnings.

It's that she is pronouncing her -ngs WRONG - GLY.

I suspect actually that it's because he pronounces a hard g at the end of an ng (running-G) as some people from the West Midlands do. So her dropping the g altogether sounds particularly wrong (g) to him.

Digby Jones himself is from humble beginnings.

*Raises eyebrow*

Jones was born on 28 October 1955 in Birmingham, England. He was educated at Bromsgrove School where he was Head Boy.

Hmmm

Bromsgrove School is a co-educational independent boarding school in the Worcestershire town of Bromsgrove, England. Founded in 1553, it is one of the oldest public schools in Britain, and one of the 14 founding members of the Headmaster's Conference

Hummmmmmble

Love Alex Scott and as a Gooner, she gets a pass from me on anything she does. She's a nice person.

She may lack some of the knowledge, but she's never been mocked for her accent when presenting football. Then again, when you have Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand or Ian Wright, all of which have strong regional accents that nobody cares about, whi suddenly has it become a thing?

For me it's another reason to get rid of the Olympics. Surrounded by snobs.

RR - I was taking the piss, not making any claim myself.

Although if you click on the youtube link, Digby does talk at some length about how it is that he went to that school when his parents couldn't have afforded it.

'They was', which seems to have infiltrated speech throughout television, is just as egregious a fault. Jenas and Scott seem to be the most prolific users of it in punditry.

She is quite good as a football co-commentator (and certainly better than most of the men).  As a lead presenter, she's a study in ignorance (she's palpably done bugger all research) and is carried by Claire Balding.

That said, it's taken Gary Lineker 20 years (and wheelbarrows of cash from the BBC) to move from not very good at all to not bad within narrowly defined parameters (ie he talks about football and not much else).  Perhaps she would have been better being pushed forward in slightly less prime time.

Totally agree yearofthepig

poor old Claire Balding has taken to supressing her own informative presentation so as to minimise the contrast.

it’s not just that Alex Scott’s entire contribution is read from the autocue, it’s the delivery, it is dreadful.

Although I think she would make a good kids’ TV presenter; cf Matt Baker.

Patel is definitely a victim of racism - but because she's an Indian tory no sympathy from the left. She is also thick, nasty and her behaviour on holiday was possibly treasonous.

Nah sorry, there’s nothing racist in Jones’ criticism of how Scott pronounced words. He might come across as a bit of a bell end but it’s not offensive, no matter how much the social media shriekers want it to be.

You are all very mean 😢

But then my cockney accent is stronger than hers. Still after years of mixing with others. No-one’s ever mocked it in my hearing.

And in primary school I stuttered, to some classmates’ amusement. I probably still do a bit and just don’t notice.

Worse though was my French partners in the Paris office who asked me not to speak to clients in French because I sounded like a peasant from Pas-de-Calais.  In fairness to them that was where I had learnt to think and speak in French, but still I thought it was rude

A little known fact is that she is distantly related to Robert Falcon Scott, of  Antarctic fame.

I would much prefer her presenting football than the likes of the annoying Lineker.
