Adopting pets from abroad

I recently spent a week volunteering at a cat welfare charity in Greece and I am adopting a cat from there.  I am just wondering what experiences people have had with adopting from abroad, especially cats?  Did the cats live long lives?  Mine has a "crackly" chest but the local vets don't have an x-ray machine so I'm taking a chance.  From googling she could have bronchitis or asthma but that is treatable.  Her bloods are all fine.  Just worried that I'm letting myself in for heartbreak but at least she will be loved and doted on for her remaining time.

There are absolutely loads in the refuges around here - sadly a lot of lockdown acquired pets have been let go

RSPCA and the like can be absurdly exacting about who they will rehome to, but we found a smaller local one that found us our boy and we ❤️ him

I thought brexit was meant to be an end to this.  British Cats for British homes.  Those forrin cats, comin' over 'ere, takin' our whiskas.  It's not right, Marjorie.

Yes there are plenty of cats in shelters in the UK (well probably not that many after lockdown and everyone wanting a pet!!) but it's more that I am actually "saving" a cat and allowing another to be saved.  She is currently in a purpose built enclosure in Greece but although the charity do their best it is not a nice life for the cats.  Especially those screaming out for attention and love.  Over there the vets won;t euthanise for some reason, the charity has so little money its a case of only the dying cats get to see the vet, ie ones with their eyes hanging out or a big gouge in their neck.  Those with lesser ailments just have to get on with it.  Its not like that in the UK.

My brother and his wife used to foster for one of the cat shelters. Met some adorable (but sometimes savage) kittens as a result. In the end they adopted a couple of them which are just fluff monsters

At every level this is the wrong thing to do.  Think of the carbon footprint involved in getting that cat.  This cat is going to come here, kill our native wildlife, destroy the plant on the way - and for what, nothing other than to fufill your selfish infantile sentimental needs.  You are a bad person for doing this.

Oh do Bog Off Geoff.   I am sure your carbon footprint is far worse than mine.  She's a girl so I am naming her an English name, it just suited her, original name was Nefali.

Buzzdog is Cypriot, adopted at around 18 months from a rescue centre he spent about 6 months in after a charity there took him from the municipal pound. Sadly my status as dog dad doesn't qualify me for a Cyprus passport.

This is it Buzz,  I def intend to get her insured.  What has been wrong with Buzz Dog?  Unfortuately these animals can have diseases/issues and can die earlier.  I had a rescued feral kitten, best cat I have ever owned.  Big black and white fluffy male.  I thought he'd live until he was about 21, nothing ever wrong with him and then he got diagnosed with kidney disease at 10 and died within 6 months :(

Thought he had epilepsy (he doesn't) which was a £4k MRI courtesy of Mr TV Supervet and other related investigations.  Has a bit of a back problem which flares up now and then, another trip to uncle Noel, the rest just the usual ex-street dog finds and eats something rancid, gets turboshits and ends up on a drip for 24 hours and usual sundry vet stuff.

Heh. This reminds me of walking my rescue and being asked where he was from by a gammon. When I told him from abroad, he brayed ‘what’s wrong with BRITISH dogs?’ and stormed off.

Anyway, he’s great.

We got a cat from Abu Dhabi.  £200 all in inc jabs and bollock removal.  Equivalent off gumtree would have been a similar price ex jabs.  None of the English shelters would let you take their mogs if you had kids.  No, I cannot explain this.

he is lovely if somewhat loathe some of me.  I passed off all the scratches as self harming.

Ah lovely cat Wang.  Mine is costing £500 incl of jabs/neutering, chip and passport - oh and Taxi from Dusseldorf to Cheshire!!!  The Welfare charity do not get anything at all it all goes towards travel and vaccination etc.  I obv will be donating from here on.

I've had 2 cats from the ME, a Persian and an Arabian Mau. The former I dragged out of a bin myself. It cost about £1.5k to get them both back, passports, flights etc.

The Persian is still very much alive although he has hyperthyroidism requiring daily medicine.  As Buzz says they never seem to lose their street instincts and will eat fecking anything - Persian boy had to have his floof shaved after getting into some chinese sticky beef and had a very expensive trip to the vets after eating coco pops out of the bin.

The Mau picked a fight with a car after jumping out of a first floor window and is no more.
