true but something for the future would be a thing to look forward to. A booking at a restaurant he has always wanted to visit or for a sporting event or something (although may of course be out of your budget I appreciate)
I don’t recall how old I am anymore but I recall at an age I regarded as a milestone, the ex girlfriend flew me off to a city I had no interest in but she was excited to visit
she treated me a dinner of all her favourite food: seafood. Oysters, mussels, crab the plate was piled high. I am at best impartial to this and generally am not a fan of shellfish particularly when they come served virtually alive and with the faces and eyes and antenna. And then you have to get the sh1tbags out of the things
so I barely ate anything and smiled pleasantly about how tasty and wonderful it all was
then in the middle of the night as I turned the eventful age, we both experienced severe vomiting and diarrhoea
one bathroom and we both sh1t ourselves whilst the other was suffering in the toilet
sometimes we would start vomiting at the smell of the other person’s vomit
the birthday day itself was spent crippled in bed and in and out taking turns in the bathroom at day
we both lost sexual attraction for each other permanently and broke up 2 months later

Lego?
If he supports a football team, get the Lego stadium - they are epic.
If not, some of the star wars stuff looks good.

Speaking as a 40 something man I prefer events to things as gifts.

so I wouldn’t do that idea

If going all out, might I suggest a home office in the garden aka shed for work?
One of those holidays in Germany where you go and drive cars around race tracks or stretches of the autobahn without a speed limit?
A dog?

Elemis men’s pro collagen marine cream. Got some for my 42nd in December and it’s kept me looking just 41. By the end of the year I expect to look 40.
