I would have thought energy costs are huge factor - would only ever be worth in the largest shops where pickers and stockers work through the night anyway.
they were abandoning 24h opening well before the pandemic
apparently custom overnight at a big store is minimal outside of festive times (when they still open very late)
They’re still staffed up at night tho for delivery order picking (though it absolutely baffles me that major supermarkets still fulfill online orders this way rather than from centralised warehouses)
If you have staff their anyway the cost of opening to the public must be minimal. Even if they dont get many customers in the small hours the open all the time tag will attract some custom. I am often caught out by supermarkets closing at 9pm or whatever.
food is stored and delivered from central warehouses boxed up. You would need to create a whole new space in a warehouse that would look very like a supermarket to allow picking for individual shopping orders to take place.
They used to be handy when I was doing funny shifts. Finish at 2 or even 4 am and get the shopping done with no other khunts around. Which may be the reason they’re abandoning it - no demand and presumably at least one extra staffer is needed for the tills.

Handy for night shift workers but doubt there's much demand.

Isn't 24 hour opening the carrot that they use to get planning permission for the new megastore through and then quietly drop as soon as they can?
