A law lecturer has been fined after drunkenly abusing staff on a British Airways flight.
Meghna Kumar was flying from London to Montreal in order to teach students at McGill University. But whilst the plane was still on the tarmac she told one stewardess to "fuck off" and said to another, who asked her to fasten her seatbelt, "I cannot fucking believe you're asking me to stand up". The pilot was sufficiently concerned that he decided to return to the gate. Kumar fell asleep, and when roused asked "are we in Canada?". The flight was delayed by two hours as a result of her behaviour.
Last week Kumar admitted drunkenly entering an aircraft. Judge Robin Johnson branded her behaviour "disgraceful" and fined her £3,750 with £750 costs. She has been banned from flying with BA for two years.
News of Kumar's antics have since spread through the tabloids and gone round the world. It has been widely reported that Kumar is shortly to join Durham University's law faculty. A spokeswoman for the university said that she was unable to disclose the identity of faculty members due to "data protection" issues. Although such issues have not prevented the university from listing its academic staff on its website, which currently makes no mention of Kumar.
