DLA Piper has announced its second redundancy consultation in under two months, with up to 140 members of staff likely to lose their jobs.

The firm laid off 15 lawyers in December and another 30 are expected to go in the latest round. And on top of this a whopping 110 support staff are also facing the axe. Associates are loudly complaining of having been shafted during the boom years only to be booted out as soon as it looks like partner drawings might be in danger. The London Leveraged Team, whose lawyers worked solidly round the clock and are now about to lose a quarter of their number, is a case in point.

Insiders also say that the firm will only be paying the statutory minimum to axed staff, which is frankly shameful. Possibly anticipating the tide of anger that is surging at the firm, UK managing partner David Bradley sent a firmwide email asking lawyers to be "respectful of each other" at this difficult time...

Sir Nigel Knowles: not worried about his pay packet

Using your skill and judgment, decide whether a spokesman for the firm:

  • apologised for doing staff over twice in as many months, said that Knowles would be offering to return the knighthood he so clearly didn't deserve and confirmed that the partnership would be looking into increasing the payouts.
  • declined to comment.
