The College of Law has apologised after LPC students were given the wrong materials in one of their exams. And were then told that it was up to them whether to rely on the materials anyway. And that they might or might not be given extra time to compensate.
Students arriving for last week's Commercial Dispute Resolution paper in the College's Guildford branch got off to a bad start when the exam was delayed for an hour due to a power cut. It eventually got underway, but after an hour and a half the students were told to stop writing as a document needed to complete one of the questions was incorrect.
It seems the invigilators were completely thrown by this. Some of them told students not to answer the question - which was not much help to those who had already done so. Others told them to answer it twice, once based on the incorrect information and once based on a corrected version of the document that was hurriedly provided. Others told students just to carry on and ignore the new document.
Students told RollOnFriday that when they requested extra time to complete the paper, some were told that they couldn't have any, others that they could have five minutes, and others that they could have 15 minutes - depending on who they asked. In short, a one-armed monkey could have done a better job.
A spokeswoman for the College told RollOnFriday that the incident was "very unfortunate", and the College was "sorry that students were unsettled as a result". She added that the "exam scripts will be scrutinised carefully and allowances will be made in the marking of the question involved to ensure that all students are treated fairly".
