Me: on balance it is probably the Chequers, but it is almost a score draw w the Anchor, which looks a bit forbidding from the outside but is actually a really nice unpretentious pub, which takes beer seriously and has a few nice sunny outdoor tables for a summer evening. It’s also the only pub in the town centre that shows football, but does so unobtrusively in the back bar.
