Two things would be good policy.. increase the start of the basic tax threshold for inflation, helps everyone a bit but more help for lowest earners.
deal with the 60% tax rate cliff edge where the personal exemption is clawed back, because this is bad illogical tax policy that can't be defended
I hate fiscal drag. In Canada the thresholds have to rise with inflation index, and parliament actually has to have the guts to override those changes with votes rather than let massive tax rate increases happen without action
Their obsession with cutting tax is the number 1 reason not to vote Conservative.
At least Boris believed (to the extent he believed in anything) in a sensible measure of tax and spend. Unfortunately, he spent it on the wrong things (like his m8s).
wot, not the rampant corruption? or the draining of the nation’s coffers on vanity projects and contracts 4 tozza donors? the fact that they’ve been in putain’s pocket until ukraine made it politically expedient not 2 b? that they’ve fooked our economy harder than mere incompetence? the appalling attitude 2wards normal ppl? their inhumanity? the rampant lies and contradictions in their public pronouncements vs actual governance? the fact that they r the single worst govt in our history?
the list goes on and on and on
tax cuts of the right, limited, sort in the right way (benefiting poor ppl) would b a good thing. it’s not the number 1 reason, that’s just braindead
As much as a I despire Sunak and gang, raising the the threshold for 40% income tax is not just a tax break for "top earners". It is a tax break for a significant proportion of the aspirational working population - and actually entirely appropriate given that high inflation leads to (very large) effective tax rate rises every year unless the threshold is changed as well. High marginal tax rates on middling incomes and above are one of the biggest bars to social mobility.
"The six-year freeze [of the 40% threshold] we are now in the midst of is set to push up further still the share of the population paying higher-rate tax, which on current forecasts will hit 14% (7.8 million) of UK adults by 2027–28 – quadruple the 3.5% (1.6 million) that did so in 1991–92. That means that, with 38 million adults (67%) set to pay income tax in 2027–28, 20% of taxpayers will be paying the higher rate. The result is that, for the 40% rate to impact the same fraction of people as it did in 1991, the higher-rate threshold would need to be nearly £100,000 in 2027–28 – almost double its actual level of £50,270."
Tax on low incomes is actually pretty low now, thanks to the coalition (i.e. Lib Dems) raising the tax free threshold so much. Combine the 40% threshold proposal with raising taxes on property / wealth and you actually have a sensible policy.
Which is all to say, this is actually quite worrying for those of us who want this lot out ASAP. Fortunately, he won't do the sensible raising other taxes part though, of course. Calling Labour to the room....

“High marginal tax rates on middling incomes and above are one of the biggest bars to social mobility.”
They're also a big driver of electoral defeat especially for right wing parties so Sunak is not being stupid here.
The band before 40% kicks in should be much much wider, probably go up to £200k pa
