The man was being held hostage and needed to be rescued. Seems reasonable to me. If there’s any fault here it’s the police not dealing with the kidnappers .
I guess this was it wasn’t a burden on the state.

are these people even screened during the selection process for elections?

Nurse! The screens!

“Mark Menzies also faced allegations he made a late-night call to a 78-year-old aide asking for help because he had been locked up by “bad people” demanding thousands of pounds for his release.”
Sorry, what’s supposed to be the wrongdoing on Menzies’ part here? He’s been kidnapped and manages to get to a phone, and calls someone he knows for help?
1

Ha.
He’ll be giving Trump ideas for a new tv show
When paid for sex goes wrong

Neighbouring constituency to Scott Benton. Lancs selection process must be "did they send an email?"
3
2
We've all been there, eh?
I guess paying the cleaning fee to the kidnapping sex workers meant he was released to serve his constituency the next day, so perfectly natural he should use constituency money to reimburse the old lady he made pay at 3am

utterly ridiculous and offensive that you get tory MPs in Lancashire anyway, although Blackpool (like other seaside resorts) has traditionally voted that way tbf
0
2
more offensive is seeing tories in Stoke on Trent and County Durham tbf
obviously all going to be a sea of red come the GE
like Kent and Surrey

if he was being extorted then he had doubtless been targeted because he was a politician, and therefore the ransom was a legitimate use of campaign funds. I don’t see the issue here.

Wonder what the police said when he reported this at the first available opportunity.
3
1
James Daly should write another letter to the police with allegations that are so secret he can't tell anyone what they are.
GMP will allocate huge amounts of resources to the secret case.

is he even really a tory when he doesn't have £5k in his savings?
Wonder what the "medical" bills were for the £3k four years ago
0
1
It's a weird story
But he could have easily afforded it - his parents were wealthy (like all Tories) so he has plenty of inherited cash
He just decided to steal from poor working class tax payers (like all Tories)
1

I should add I have never heard of this person before and know nothing about them or this story so am purely making assumptions on the basis they are a Tory

"Menzies grew up in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, raised by his mother after his Merchant Navy father died a month before he was born.[4] With his mother working shifts at the local ICI factory to support them, he attended a local primary school before benefiting from a private education, using the Assisted Places Scheme, at a nearby independent secondary school, the Keil School."
Pls confirm how you know he's wealthy?
3

lol at him being held hostage. And he's also used campaign funds for his own medical expenses. Seems he's a bit prone to getting into scrapes and doesn't learn.

Call me strange but if my boss called in the small hours of the morning to say they were being held to ransom and gave me an address I wouldn't just rock up alone with the cash and I'd want the police at least watching and preferably ready to pile in. Even more so if my boss is a politician so it's possible to immediately contact the diplomatic protection mob.

Indeed that's what they always say and the police are used to that. It's pretty reasonable to assume some chancers from Grindr aren't sophisticated enough to bug your phone as the recipient of a call and aren't carrying firearms.
2

Sounds like a reasonable use a campaign funds to me - presumably the "other expenses" included leaflet printing, a fundraising tombola, etc.

I'm ignoring the stupidity as an MP of meeting strangers from a dating site and then going to two different private venues with them.

whoa... so much more coming out about this chap (most of it has come out before but somehow managed to be swept under the carpet, probably because there was so much sleaze to report they couldn't cover all of it).
Drunk dogs, street brawls, showing a rent boy around the HoP, amphetamines.. previous issues with being "held" captive..

just saw a screen grab from the Daily Hell dated 1st April 2023 about a Tory MP (unnamed) who needed £4k to get out of a brothel.. not sure of the screen grabs veracity but if true, there's far more than 2 incidents.

Even I insist on meeting potential sex partners in a public space to avoid turning up to a flat and finding that the pretty 5' 2" blonde I was chatting to on an app is in fact three 6' 3" blokes who would like my wallet and my elite salesman timepiece.

hey, you know after the first time that happens, wouldn't you have thought he'd have learned a lesson?
Wouldn't you think an MP would be more cautious in the first place?
Wouldn't you think he'd report it to the police after he was freed?
I'm sure we'll find a way to make this about Angela Rayner by the end of today.

CAN WE PLEASE GO BACK TO FOCUSSING ON ANGELA RAYNER NOW!!
AFTER ALL, SHE BOUGHT HER COUNCIL HOUSE!!

careful there BB, that could mean it's all Thatchers fault and you really don't want that now do you

Laz the issue is not that he called a friend for help, it was that the friend was repaid from campaign funds.
0
0
Guy, the friend also had to cash in their ISA for him, I'm delighted she got her money back but he paid her corruptly. He had also been treating this donor money as personal funds by transferring it to his own account (allegedly).
Honestly, this lot makes the John Major years look saintly

This is 1000x worse than the worst thing Rayner is accused of and is 100% the reason the tozzas have been pushing the Rayner story through their client journalists. They knew this would break and needed some whataboutery cover. What is wrong with the tozza party that it puts these morally weak people into positions where they can be so easily compromised?

I'd still like to find out what was in the James Daly letter to GMP that warrants putting twelve (12) detectives on to the case.
I'm not in tax, so is it normal for the police to investigate potential tax crimes or wouldn't that be the HMRCs role? Help me understand this..

Every day it gets worse and still Sunak grimly clings on the trappings of power despite leaving the UK with a lame duck government for month after month, down to 19% support now. How low can he go?

Eddie while I’m not supporting the decision to put 12 rozzas on it, the allegations, if true, don’t just amount to a breach of tax law but also electoral law.
1
0
And BTW the people saying Rayner shouldn’t be investigated at all despite credible criminal allegations just because she’s on their “side” as the same as the people who said “but it’s just a cake” when Boris Johnson was being investigated.
Politicians make the law. If there are credible allegations of law breaking, however serious, those allegations should be investigated, even if they are obviously politically motivated.

I've seen this sort of post on social media today listing Tory MPs. It's always mostly gay Tory MPs who get listed, e.g. more than half of those on the list posted by previous poster. I'm not saying that all of those MPs are victims of a homophobic media and its amplifiers. However, given that immediately after at the last election there were only 20 out gay Tory MPs elected out of 365 Tory MPs in total, it seems statistically unlikely that such a large percentage would feature in these cases without them being targeted by the media.

I wish Rik Mayall was alive today.. I'd love to see what Lord B'Stard would make of this. (I'm guessing he would be impressed by the debauchery but not too happy about the homosexuality but in the end, he'd be focused on how little money Menzies has)

The helper used her own money. Why are campaign funds being used to reimburse her.
Also, it's beginning to look like he's got a pattern of dipping into campaign funds for personal expenses so the kidnapping may not have happened at all.

It very likely happened. He got into a sticky situation and they threatened him either with violence or some kind of media stunt. He decided to pay up and extricate himself from the situation. Why bother plod afterwards when you know they’re shit and their involvement may cause the baddies to go to the media.
