Yes. Bad result for the TRAs but wonder if they will try and protest violently / threaten violence to stop it like they did the film showing at the university.
our clients sought external legal advice (from their previous
solicitors). Following receipt of that legal advice, the decision was made that the event would
not proceed.
Our clients have since approached us for legal advice in connection with this matter. Following
receipt of that advice and an Opinion from David Welsh, Advocate, they have reconsidered
Given that the general content of the previous advice has now been made public in an open letter, presumably the client has consented to that waiver of privilege? And Ms Cherry can now ask to see it?
@UnleashedComedy The venue (Leith Arches) has cancelled our gig this Thursday following pressure from censorious activists Is there an #Edfringe venue that believes in free artistic expression that will host us?
Our Comedy Unleashed gig at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has been CANCELLED by our venue following online pressure. It is astonishing that a comedy night at the largest arts festival in the world should be prevented from going ahead, simply because activists are offended. The comedy industry is in a dire state. It’s about time that promoters, venues, comedy critics and comedians made a concerted effort to support free expression in the arts.
Looks like a pretty clear case of belief discrimination. Here’s the legal opinion I secured when I was unlawfully cancelled. It is of general application, there for all to use & sets the law out very clearly. Here’s the link. https://joannacherry.scot/news/stand
“Linehan and Comedy Unleashed posted another statement that appeared to be from the Leith Arches Instagram feed but is no longer online, in which the venue reportedly said it had been emailed about “a comedian who had been booked for an upcoming comedy show this Thursday … from, rightly so, outraged members of our community.””
ugly and bonkers. what a gift for the nasty party these loons are.
It seems that certain people are so fearful that their opinions cannot be defended by rational debate that they are prepared to stop other people from engaging in any sort of public discussion by whatever means are available, and others vent their fears by threatening messages on social media. It's appalling.
Recently there was a big hoo-hah about the new Harry Potter game, which prompted some people to declare that JK Rowling's recent novel under the Galbraith pseudonym was anti-trans. I thought this was unlikely, but I've just read the book and in nearly 1200 pages there's a single exchange about trans people.
I think Linehan might struggle to use the same line as Cherry because she has always been impeccably polite about the whole issue whereas it might be easier to make an argument that Linehan's argumentation is provocative
Linehan is in my Neil Oliver Box of Sadness. Not that I disagree with his core dismay at the situation, just that it's awful how much his obsession with it has ruined his life.
No matter your views on the underlying situation, I don’t see that becoming fixated on it to the extent of losing your career and being known as the guy who obsesses over trans people is very helpful.
Chimp some people become obsessed with it because it makes absolutely no sense on any level, and they won’t rest until gender ideology is relegated to the same level as religion in public life.
yes some people cannot let injustice or irrationality slide, I think it's probably a manifestation of neurodivergence
most of us just think "well, I still need to make a living and I don't want to fall out with all my friends and at the end of the day it is depressing to think about so I'll keep my head down and hope no one I care about is affected by this at any point"
but we are the cowards and we don't change the world for the better
I don't think it is helpful that feminist rhetoric prior to this could be quite dehumanising
I was listening to Dead Men Don't Rape (bangin tune by Delilah Bon) on the bus home last night and reflecting that it's weird to just do a song about killing men but men who assert that they are women deserve different consideration. Indeed there's a line about the plight of trans people in the song.
If we had a more moderate "everyone needs to get along" policy none of this would have come about
If we had a more moderate "everyone needs to get along" policy none of this would have come about
That’s the problem with this particular issue, isn’t it?
In almost every other situation or issue there is a moderate path through. With this one, however, there is no solution which is satisfactory for the power-wielding* gender ideologists other than treating men as women in every respect just because they say so. This clearly and demonstrably poses a safety, dignity and fairness issue for women in a number of ways, and the same women who fought the old misogyny and injustice are at the forefront of the fight against the new misogyny and aren’t going to give up and fvck off just because some blue haired spicy straights and their right-on “allies” (including of this parish) call them transphobes or bigots.
"most of us just think "well, I still need to make a living and I don't want to fall out with all my friends and at the end of the day it is depressing to think about so I'll keep my head down and hope no one I care about is affected by this at any point"
but we are the cowards and we don't change the world for the better"
I don't think this is accurate. I think this is far too flattering. After all, solicitors and such drafted the policies being used to oppress, violate the rights of, and cancel others, ok'd the capture of all public institutions, repeated the mantras, stood for nothing of value to society, advocated measures that cause harm to others (but not them), through their children to the front of hyper-sexualised drag queen story hours and pride parades for the social media likes, and so on
There's no possible neutral position, mindful of the irreversible harm being caused to women and children
Look how many of you are at great pains to distance yourself from Graham above, all the while pretending you stand for values. You stand for values as it pertains to lining your own pockets, and your mate Dave's pockets. A test of values is not "what do I do in easy examples?" is it?
Why people do nothing in times of dire need for them to do something to help? Why are solicitors and such people so unquestioningly obedient?
"The manager of a fruit and vegetable shop places in his window, among the onions and carrots, the slogan: ‘Workers of the World, Unite!’ Why does he do it?...Is he genuinely enthusiastic about the idea of unity among the workers of the world?
Is his enthusiasm so great that he feels an irrepressible impulse to acquaint the public with his ideals? Has he really given more than a moment’s thought to how such a unification might occur and what it would mean?
That poster was delivered to our greengrocer from the enterprise headquarters along with the onions and carrots. He put them all into the window simply... because everyone does it, and because that is the way it has to be.
If he were to refuse, there could be trouble. He could be reproached for not having the proper ‘decoration’ in his window; someone might even accuse him of disloyalty. He does it because these things must be done if one is to get along in life.
The slogan is really a sign, and as such it contains a subliminal but very definite message... ‘I, the greengrocer XY, live here and I know what I must do. I behave in the manner expected of me... I am obedient and therefore I have the right to be left in peace.’
If the greengrocer had been instructed to display the slogan, ‘I am afraid and therefore unquestioningly obedient’, he would not be nearly as indifferent to its semantics, even though the statement would reflect the truth.
The greengrocer would be embarrassed and ashamed to put such an unequivocal statement of his own degradation... To overcome this complication, his expression of loyalty must take the form of a sign.
It must allow the greengrocer to say, ‘What’s wrong with the workers of the world uniting?’ Thus the sign helps the greengrocer to conceal from himself the low foundations of his obedience... It hides them behind the façade of something high... that something is ideology.
Ideology is a specious way of relating to the world. It offers human beings the illusion of an identity, of dignity, and of morality while making it easier for them to part with them.
It enables people to deceive their conscience and conceal their true position and their inglorious modus vivendi, both from the world and from themselves. It is an excuse that everyone can use, from the greengrocer, who conceals his fear of losing his job to the highest functionary... Individuals need not believe all these mystifications, but they must behave as though they did, or they must at least tolerate them in silence, or get along well with those who work with them
For this reason, however, they must live within a lie. They need not accept the lie. It is enough for them to have accepted their life with it and in it."
solicitors and such drafted the policies being used to oppress, violate the rights of, and cancel others, ok'd the capture of all public institutions, repeated the mantras, stood for nothing of value to society, advocated measures that cause harm to others (but not them), through their children to the front of hyper-sexualised drag queen story hours and pride parades for the social media likes, and so on

Who's that gigolo on the street
With his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet
Hanging off the curb, looking all disturbed
At the boys from home, they all came running
They were making noise, manhandling toys
That's the girls on the block with the nasty girls
Wearing padded bras sucking beers through straws
Dropping down their drawers, where did you get yours?
Gigolo, huh, sukka?
Gigolo, gigolo, huh, sukka?
Who's looking good today?
Who's looking good in every way?
No style rookie
You better watch don't mess with me
No money man could win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me
Get funky
Yeah Timmy
Tell it like it is
Check out this DJ
So you say you wanted money but you know it's never funny
When your shows worn through and there's a rumble in your tummy
But you had to have style get a gold tooth smile
Put a girl on the corner so you can make a pile
Committed a crime and went inside
It was coming your way but you had to survive
When you lost your babe, you lost the race
Now you're looking at me to take her place
Who's looking good today?
Who's looking good in every way?
No style rookie
You better watch don't mess with me
Smokin'. Not cokin'. Get funky sax.
Looking good, hanging with the wild bunch.
Looking good in a Buffalo Stance.
Looking good when it comes to the crunch
Looking good's a state of mind
State of mind don't look behind you
State of mind or you'll be dead
State of mind may I remind you
Bomb the Bass... rock this place!
What is he like?
What's he like anyway?
Yo' man what do you expect the guy's a gigolo man
You know I mean?
No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of.
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance

We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
So don't you get fresh with me
Wind on my face, sound in my ears
Water from my eyes, and you on my mind
As I sink, diving down deep... deeper into your soul.
No moneyman can win my love
It's sweetness that I'm thinking of.
We always hang in a Buffalo Stance
We do the dive every time we dance
I'll give you love baby not romance
I'll make a move nothing left to chance
