house stresses

Anyone else get really worked up about things wrong/going wrong with the house?

Couple of skirting boards in mine are cracked and its driving me insane

surely not the only one roffers!!

You should budget between 3 and 4% of capital value for repairs each year.  Having to maintain and replace stuff is normal.  I’m having my house painted at the moment - it’s a big job. If all I had to worry about was a cracked skirting board I’d be delighted

Yes totally

Last week a wierd patch appeared on one of my walls. Totally dry to the touch

I cleaned it up with sugar soap but it doesnt look right and now I feel like I need to paint over it

Very annoying

Does Parsnip have a nasty case of recurring subsidence?

I doubt I’ve spent more than 3% of the value of the house in repairs and maintenance (as opposed to improvements) during the last 20 years…

I get annoyed when I find that something isn't working and it turns out it hasn't been working for a while and several people knew this but didn't bother telling me.  Ditto when people break things and don't say anything and go to use them at the weekend only to find they're not working.

My house is mostly held up by cracks. You learn to live with it. The night sweats of what if tend to go when you realise that the building has been standing for 100+ years and is fine.

if the weird patch is on an exterior wall, particularly if a pre-1920s house and within 1.5m of the upper floor ceiling it's damp (unless you've tested it with a moisture meter).  Get your gutters cleared, wait 3 months and then repaint.
