Sir Woke - I was planning on going to the Kufflink ( . . . . I was there quite a lot in their failed attempt to go up the season before last). Decided to go to Dag & Red -v- Southend Utd for a fierce local-ish derby. No stoppage time in the 1st Half here
clapham lad - I’ve been to Daggers a few times, like the club, it’s in an absolute pub desert mind isn’t i
so’s the Kuflink mind you which may explain why it’s got a decent clubhouse bar. The setting is wonderfully old skool, in among the pylons and cranes and water towers and scrapyards. There’s a factory next to the ground that looks like Union Carbide Bhopal. I mean like Union Carbide Bhopal looks now. Proper industrial setting. Not many really old skool grounds left - Stockport is one, that I want to visit.
What’s your point, Dux? I’m not posh, i don’t come from a fancy background, but I did actually grow up in Twickenham and lived there for around 25 years, so yeah. Maybe my interest in rugby is just part and parcel of that. But don’t let that stop you being a judgy little bitch, yar?
I’m trying to remember if I’ve been to a game at Ebbsfleet or not. I can’t picture their ground like I can say for their neighbours Dartford but these pre-seasons do tend to merge into one. It doesn’t help that I’ve a suspicion that they’ve changed their name.
What was your view of the standard? There are some big names in the NL these days (Oldham were founder members of the Premier League ffs), but what has surprised me is some of the teams getting relegated from it - the likes of Saunthorpe, Torquay, Yeovil. Makes me think the standard has really moved up a notch.
Ebbsfleet used to be called Gravesend & Northfleet (before 2007, wiki tells me). They’ve been at their current ground stonebridge road (the Kuflink Stadium) since 1905.
Regarding the standard - it was sleepy at first but actually when it perked up in the second half I forgot I was watching a fifth tier game. Ebbsfleet have only just come up from the national north but they were pretty positive and unlucky to lose; the first Moors goal was an absolute cracker tho so I suppose you could say it deserved to win the game; a teddy sheringham style glancing header. I think the standard in the National has improved a lot, and tbh now that it’s virtually 100% full time pro, they should just make it part of the Football League.
Laz - I was at Sutton Utd -v- Notts County on the opening day, been going to Sutton Utd for donkeys years, now that's a real old fashioned, Non League Ground. Since they got promoted in 2021, they've completely refurbished Gander Green Lane, the new stand at the Collingwood Road end is quite something.
Coming back to Ebbsfleet, I always used to go via St Pancras Intl to Ebbsfleet Intl, but lately, I've been going via Waterloo, Waterloo East to Northfleet - that's a very steep climb on my way back mind you. I still remember going there when the old Liam Daish stand was a terrace, all been replaced by a £5m all seater stand. Pre-Covid, I used to go into the clubhouse fairly regularly, now I think you can only buy drinks inside, drink outside. I used to go fairly regularly when Daryl McMahon was Manager, couldn't believe the likes of Drury, MAgri and Danny Kedwell were on £100,000pa on 52 week contracts ! ! ! !
. . . . . . I still say Ebbsfleet should have gone up in the National League Play Off Final at Dorking in May 2022, they were ahead and the Surrey FA Ref played more added on time than was required
Yes it’s a fair joke up to northfleet isn’t it. Surprised the railway got up a height there. The whole area is a bit disjointed and there isn’t really a town of Ebbsfleet at all - there isn’t even a town of Northfleet really. It’s a fairly grim area really, but deeply resonant. I love the derelict pub near the football ground with a sheer cliff above it atop which sits a stern looking council estate. The edgelands.
Re the ‘Fleet, it is a shame they replaced the veteran, but massive (for non-league) Liam Daisy stand (only called that since 2022 btw) with the new edifice. Yes, the new one looks great from the road (only thing nearby that doesn’t look derelict) and has a big club shop and even a couple of executive boxes in it, but its capacity is pathetic compared to the big old cow shed that was the Uncle Liam, and the ground has slightly less of a trad NON LEAGUE look when you’re having that stand (but not if you’re looking in any other direction tbf).
I’m not one for a winter break but midweek fixtures in winter can do one. If you need to play twice a week play them in August when the evenings are long, the pitches are still fresh and you can watch games on the terraces in shorts and a T-shirt.
(Obviously it’ll still be cold in Barnsley this time of the year)
ChorIey away can be bleak mid winter but they do serve hot Vimto, it does the trick. I don't get interested in the football properly until the cricket is over, it belongs in the winter for me.

Second game of the season for me yesterday.
Have you got yourself a season ticket yet Laz?

Ah yes, Gravesend and Northfleet. Think they had some gimmicky thing where fans could vote on signings and sacking the manager.
ps I know the footballing line is going ever southwards but surely they were NLS and not North?

sorry yes, NL South
They absolutely bossed it too, winning 32 of 46 games and racking up 103pts

and yes, that was them, the first social media football club, although those days are long gone

Best chant or song heard in non league? For me it’s a toss up between
Well you can tell by the way I use my walk
I’m a Minsterman, yeah I’m from York
or
In Dublin’s fair city, where girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on poor Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheelbarrow
Throuhh Wealdstone and Harrow
Singing *clap clap, clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap* HENDON!

I love a winter weeknight special under the lights! But also a balmy august evening game. Missed last night’s at Fleet due to work boo.
Evbsfleet a much better place to watch football than gillingham. Surroundings just as shite but the ground is better and the crowd more of a laff

The Gills might have a good push for promotion this year.
