Another win for the Tories

"Tata's decision to follow the Conservative business model of managed decline for British steel making will cause the job losses of 3,000 hard-working men and women,"

To be fair to the government, steel making in this country by the private sector either seems not to be viable or companies that do treat the government as an open wallet open to blackmail. Sadly this was probably the prudent outcome. Not to say the UK couldn't have a steel industry but need to go back to the start and design it properly and probably make it state owned.

With China looking like a 100% sure thing over the next decade, is there really any need to have a domestic manufacturing capability for strategically and economically vital resources that's run by the state at a loss if necessary?  Tories say no.

In all the navel-gazing about British economic decline, the massive under-discussed factor is energy prices.

The UK has, by far, the highest industrial energy costs in the developed world. As long as that remains true, the country's heavy industry can never sustain itself and will carry on collapsing.
