Exclusive: LG and Irwin Mitchell end merger talks

Lawrence Graham and Irwin Mitchell were in merger talks which have now come to an end, RollOnFriday can reveal.

LG has already courted fellow City firm Field Fisher Waterhouse, an outfit most famous for its bickering partners. And it has now been caught winking slyly at the winner of this year's Golden Turd. It knows how to pick them.

On the face of it, it's hard to see how the merger could ever have worked. Turnover at LG is around £56m, compared to £184m at IM. But, more to the point, equity partners at IM take home an average of £569k, which is almost double the £303k pulled in by partners at LG. The figures clearly didn't stack up, and sources suggest that the discussions have now ended.

RollOnFriday found out about the merger talks after LG's pitch document landed on a desk at RoF Towers. It contains the most sensitive information imaginable (none of which will be printed here, obviously). But it's massively embarrassing for the firm, and it's not clear why it didn't follow standard data room rules and allow parties to see the document but not to take it away. And it's a salutary lesson to Managing Partners in these merger-mad times to be careful with what they commit to writing.

An LG partner hears what happened to his document

Neither Lawrence Graham nor Irwin Mitchell would comment.

Crikey. All you need to do is add Dickie Dees into that mix and you would have a firm capable of winning the Golden Turd award every year for the next millennium.

IM : the firm that is incapable of assuring confidentiality.

There will be a deep sigh of relief that a highly sensitive document containing embarrassing information is safely in the hands of journalists.

re. sensitive data, sounds good, but the truth is the LLP accounts and the last few years' financials in The Lawyer, plus directory rankings, give you all the data you need to know that LG is not looking that wonderful. In fact, that they were even considering a merger with a firm aiming at doing process work via an ABS tells you a lot about their desperation.

if Irwin Mitchell had received the document do they have a document management system to store it in?

Sounds like the dd led to a walk away. The fact that LG were looking to merge with a PI firm will do them no good at all. IM is trying to buy itself into commercial work. The PI badge counts heavily against them. Can't see them succeeding especially as the golden turd results show that it is not a great place to work. Over paying in the market for talented lawyers doesn't guarantee success as many have found out to their cost.

Anyone else care to bet that despite the figures quoted above, LG manage to pay their staff better than IM? 'No, but we can't possibly pay the paralegals seven whole pounds an hour. The managing partner needs a new duck pond, and the chairman need a new car - he looks like a total oik in that Mercedes.'
