While firms across the City announce results suggesting growth is back (temporarily at least), Northern behemoth Walker Morris is bucking the trend by laying off associates.

According to RollOnFriday's sources two unlucky lawyers in Walker Morris' corporate department had just returned from maternity leave when they were made redundant. A spokeswoman for the firm confirmed, in a carefully worded statement, that "following a restructuring exercise, two associates have left the firm." Although she refused to be drawn on whether the two were freshly back from maternity leave, saying only "we cannot comment on specific details". So that sounds a little bit like a yes, then.

It's not been the best of times for Walker Morris's diversity policy of late. Staff at the firm were reportedly left seething earlier this year, after the decision was made to slash the firm's maternity policy offering without consulting staff. So reports that new mothers are feeling the brunt of redundancies at the firm are likely to go down about as well as a pint of powdered baby formula.
