Last week RollOnFriday kicked off the Australian Firm of the Year Survey 2014. It covers everything from the prospects of promotion at law firms to the quality of their loos and gives staff from Perth to Brisbane the chance to rate their firm in all the ways that matter. The survey takes 30 seconds to complete.

Despite DLA Piper missing its targets and freezing pay, the firm is off to a cracking start. Staff praise the firm for its “very clear global strategy” and “great commitment to pro bono – both globally and locally”.

Even better though is two time winner Marque Lawyers. Staff can’t get enough of the perks on offer from “excellent magazines” to “toast, peanut butter, cake and a well-stocked bar” which is “unsurpassable”. The culture seems pretty relaxed too: “4pm pens down for drinks on Friday, and it's Asahi beers”.

Meanwhile, it’s a different story at Mills Oakley as one insider likens the partners genuineness and collegiality to “a stiletto wrapped in cotton wool”. Ouch.  Special mention also to the “snot bandit” in the gents’ loos, who “knows no bounds, wiping away whether it's 1's or 2's”. Nice. And Bakers get a hammering for its lack of openness: “the firm is really, really bad at sharing information”.

But neither is faring as badly as Clayton Utz where “people are PISSED about pay freezes despite making targets and partners getting pay increases”, while being “overworked” and “burnt out”.

What do you think about your firm? We’d love to hear from you. Winners and losers will be revealed in the new year.
