A senior Sydney lawyer has been sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion.

Paul John Gregory, former CEO of Dibbs Barker and a boxing promoter, made $400,000 from a fight he helped promote between Kostya Tszyu and Jesse James Leija in Melbourne. He banked the money offshore in an effort to avoid paying tax, but the ruse was discovered after an investigation by a taskforce involving the Australian Taxation Office, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. He was found guilty of tax evasion by the Victorian Supreme Court earlier this year.

Won't be needing these for a while

Sentencing him to two years' jail, of which Gregory must serve a minimum of one, Justice Simon Whelan said that his “conduct involved blatant dishonesty and the exploitation of your position as a solicitor.”

Gregory was a business associate and co-conspirator with Glenn Wheatley, who some might remember as John Farnham's band manager.
